Sidney Clopton Lanier (1842-1881), one of the South's greatest poets and musicians, was born in this historic Cottage in 1842. His most famous works include the poems "The Song of the Chattahoochee" and "The Marshes of Glynn." He also composed a cantata that was performed at the 1876 Centenniel celebration of the United States in Philadelphia. Furnished according to the period (c. 1850), visitors can view one of Lanier's flutes, personal items, and even the wedding dress (1867) of his bride, Mary Day Lanier. Museum shop. Listed with National Register of Historic Places, designated a Landmark of American Music, and one of only 31 National Poetry Landmarks, as awarded by the Academy of American Poets in 2004.
