The festival includes a Disc Golf Tournament at scenic Claystone Park and Dragon Boat Races at Sandy Beach. For the Races, teams of 20 paddlers will be competing in timed heats in 40 foot boats adorned with a dragon’s head and tail. Each boat has a drummer that sets the strokes for the paddlers and a steer person that keeps the boat on course. The history of dragon boat racing dates back 2,400 years to China. Qu Yuan, a political Chinese poet, sacrificed his life to the Milou River after his exile. Local fisherman raced in their boats to save him. They splashed the water with their oars and beat drums wildly to ward off hungry fish and water dragons. Today dragon boat racing is a cross-cultural sport with events throughout the world, both at the local and international level. Its popularity has made it the fastest growing team water sport. Recognized for promoting camaraderie, strength and endurance in its participants, the sport is also gaining grounds in corporate teambuilding.
