  • Looking for a bit of history?

Begin your weekend in Rome visiting the Chieftains Museum / Major Ridge Home.  This National Landmark, built in 1794, is the original home of prominent Cherokee leader, Major Ridge and is a nationally-designated site along the infamous Trail of Tears.  Peruse artifacts discovered on the grounds behind the house, as well as other materials relating to the removal of the Cherokees from the Georgia area which are on display.  Afterwards, fast forward to 1942, and continue on to Oak Hill/ Martha Berry Museum.  This 170-acre estate of Berry College founder Martha Berry includes a magnificent Greek revival home, gardens, museum, trails and much more.  End your day with a Southern family-style dinner at the Partridge Café, a cozy, welcoming diner known as a Rome landmark for more than 60 years.  Stay overnight at the Claremont House Bed & Breakfast, an elegant 1882 Victorian Gothic listed in the National Register of Historic Places, before heading north on Sunday to the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park in Fort Oglethorpe.  The Park commemorates one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, where more than a quarter of the soldiers were killed, wounded, or missing. Take a self-guided tour of the 5,000 acre battlefield and hear an audio-tape tell of the three-day conflict that claimed 34,000 Union and Confederate casualties.  On your way out of town, dine at one of Fort Oglethorpe’s 50 local, national chain and fast-food restaurants on Lafayette Road and Battlefield Parkway (Hwy 2A).
