Annual Oktoberfest parade in downtown Helen

Immerse yourself in the rich tradition of healing with medicines made from local plants. A medicinal plant hike and medicine making demonstration will also be included with a focus on stocking the winter medicine cabinet. Interpretive Ranger and Herbalist Johnna Tuttle is the instructor.

Saturday, Sep 18, 2010 / 9 AM to 3 PM - Help Clean up Smith Creek in honor of Georgia’ Rivers Alive. Food will be provided for volunteers. $5 parking. 800-573-9659, ext.305.

Friends of Smithgall Woods will host a day of van tours highlighting the beauty, history, and attributes of this unique conservation area. These guided tours will allow guests to see areas usually closed to vehicle traffic. There will be four tours available during the day. Call to register. 706-878-3087.

Saturday, September 25, 2010 / 10 AM to 4 PM - Learn how to catch a trout, paddle a canoe, and shoot a shotgun. Try activities like fly tying and casting, bass fishing basics, and trout fishing in the stocked stream, archery, BB gun and skeet shooting. 800-573-9659 ext. 305.

Saturdays in October, 2010 / 1 PM to 3 PM - Enjoy autumn color in 2010 on this ranger-guided hike on our 3-mile trail from the park to the town. Hikers can take a park shuttle back or return on the trail on own. Register in advance. $5 parking. 800-573-9659 ext. 305.

Enjoy the natural beauty of the season with hands-on pioneer skills exhibits, hayrides through the park, traditional craft vendors, mountain music, and apple cider from a hand-cranked press. No registration required. Parking includes an additional fee of $1 to benefit Friends of Smithgall Woods.

November 25-Dec. 11, 2010, the Festival of trees takes place at Unicoi State Park & Conference Center just 4 miles north of Helen, Ga. Approximately 38 trees and 24 wreaths will be decorated with various themes and on display for FREE PUBLIC VIEWING. Bid on your favorite, during the silent auction.
