Athens, Georgia, is known throughout the state for the prestigious University of Georgia and its championship-winning football team. For locals, Athens is also known for its great food scene. And now, with Hugh Acheson’s restaurant Five and Ten getting a culinary nod from powerhouse The James Beard Foundation, as a semifinalist for the 2016 James Beard Awards: Outstanding Restaurant category, the Athens food scene is about to go national.

To win, or even be selected as a finalist for the coveted award, restaurants must be “a restaurant in the United States that serves as a national standard bearer of consistent quality and excellence in food, atmosphere and service.” Wonderful ambience, superior customer service and a mix of Southern standards with more contemporary dishes are what got Five and Ten on the short list of nominees.

Start your meal with appetizer favorites like pimento cheese and bacon marmalade or oysters on the half shell with mignonette, cocktail sauce and benne crackers. Entrees like Frogmore Stew (a mix of wild Gulf shrimp, house-made andouille sausage, grilled corn, fingerling potatoes, in a tomato broth served with grilled bread) give diners a taste of the Georgia coast. Unexpected dishes, like Tonkotsu-style ramen, take your mouth on a trip to the Far East, while weekly specials like fried chicken “Sunday Supper” bring you firmly back to the South.

Whatever your choice, Five and Ten is an award-winning experience in a town filled with delicious options.
