Over the past five years, Griffin and Spalding County have been growing into a community for the arts, from ballet to choral music, and from drama to fine arts and crafts. The Griffin Area Arts Alliance is an umbrella organization the arts and was a catalyst in restoring the Griffin Auditorium. The 1100 seat facility is the scene of the Griffin Community Concert Association's yearly concert series, the Griffin Ballet Theatre productions, and many other performers and organizations.
Several annual events are the subject of excitement for weeks in advance, drawing families from many communities far and wide. The Kiwanis Spalding County Fair is held each October and attracts both the young and the young at heart to enjoy the excitement of the midway rides and games.
The last weekend in April also welcomes another major attraction. The Annual Iris City Arts and Crafts Festival, sponsored by the Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce, brings a variety of quality artists and craftsmen to participate in the festival. Top local entertainment is provided during the two-day event held in the shady surroundings of City Park. Local clubs and organizations take advantage of the Festival to raise funds that are channeled back into the community for charitable programs and projects.
The Griffin Downtown Council sponsors a "Taste of Downtown" twice a year, 4th of July Parade and fireworks, Iris City Beauty Pageants with categories for all ages through 18 years, Christmas Open House, an antique arts and crafts fair each October, and many other activities to showcase the completed phases of our Main Street City's Streetscape program and the unique architecture of the historic downtown.
