The recently merged city of McRae-Helena has been designated as a “Four for the Future” City by the University of Georgia Public Service Outreach and Georgia Trend Magazine. McRae-Helena is one of four Georgia communities that have worked across public-private sectors and nonprofit boundaries on challenging issues to improve the quality of life for their citizens.

McRae-Helena was incorporated on January 1, 2015 and is the first city-city government consolidation in the State of Georgia since 1921. Known as the Crossroads City, McRae-Helena is the convergence point for five state highway routes and two major rail lines. The community has a rich political history having been the home of two former Georgia governors – Eugene Talmadge and Herman Eugene Talmadge. Their historic home has been rehabilitated as the Sugar Creek Plantation and is a popular tourist destination and event center.
