On the north side of Blakely's Court Square stands the last remaining Confederate flag staff still standing in the United States. The stalwart pole was hewn from a longleaf pine tree that grew one mile southwest of Blakely.  It was hauled by oxen to the city and erected by Thomas Williams and others on May 16, 1861.
