Writer Bill Shakespeare encounters four of his own most famous characters up close, personal, and very ticked off. Audiences will recognize show creator Jeremy Webb from his brilliant performance as a one-man version of "A Christmas Carol" at the Rylander in 2011. A British theatre veteran, Webb brings wit and laughter to what so many people find boring. Touring partner Simon Henderson plays Shakespeare himself. Webb and Henderson often improvise dialogue with hilarious results.
Throughout the play, Shakespeare has to defend his own writing as the four fictional characters - MacBeth, Iago, Hamlet and Juliet - challenge the author to write in a modern way, arguing that no one understands them anymore. Featuring a "greatest hits" of famous Shakespeare quotes, speeches and the occasional soliloquy, "Shakespeare on Trial" becomes interactive for the last 15 minutes as Shakespeare calls upon the audience to play judge and jury.
