The museum was first organized in 1996 by a group dedicated to preserving the unique history of Hazlehurst and Jeff Davis County. Hazlehurst was incorporated in 1870, and then Jeff Davis County was created in 1905. But these hauntingly beautiful lands filled with natural beauty, towering forests, rolling farmlands, and abundant wildlife were once home to the Native Americans - primarily the Creek and Cherokee - and are as much a part of the history as the early families who first lived at Handtown to the coming of the railroad and Mile Post 8-1/2 to the founding of Hazlehurst. Take a journey to the past and visit the museum, rebuilt and restructured in 2012, to learn about the fascinating timeline from the pioneers to the plantations to its 21st century progress.
