No visit to Newnan is complete without a stroll through the historic downtown square. Shop in the same buildings that have stood as the town square since as early as 1868. Checkerboards have been added on street corners for a quick shopping break game.
In the 1830s, business in Coweta County was booming. The town had everything from general merchandise stores to saloons, lawyers, doctors, repair shops, a hatter and a cake shop on the downtown square. After the Civil War, most of the wooden buildings in downtown were replaced with brick. The buildings that reside on the court square now date from 1868 to 1960, but most were built between 1895 and 1900. Throughout the surrounding suburban development, the City of Newnan's town square has remained vital and relatively intact for over a century.
