Joseph Standing was a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day saints who was killed by a mob near the town of Varnell, north of Dalton in July 1879. Today, the memorial is maintained by the Mormon church in recognition of his martyrdom. Contact the Dalton Visitors Center details.
