Barrow County Museum

74 W Athens St.
Winder, GA 30680

County museum located in the old Barrow County Jail, built in 1914. See hanging tower, jail cells, and exhibits on Senator Richard B. Russell, county history and Fort Yargo.

A small granite monument honoring the unknown Confederate dead that once stood at Triangle Park in Rosehill Cemetery now resides at the museum. One Confederate killed at Jug Tavern was reburied at Triangle Park in 1907.  Extensive research initiated by a relative in 1971 identified the man as Martin Van Buren Parkhurst of Kentucky.  He had been purposefully buried near the spring of a local Unionist.

Open: M-F 1-4 pm. For Saturday tour or tour of museum at other times, contact Bill Wheeler at 770-867-0427 or Helen Mc Daniel at 770-867-3804 or Bill Cook at 770-307-2063. Just a short walk to the Historic County Courthouse and Mainstreet Winder.
