Every year many people visit the city to see Thomasville's famous live oak tree, The Big Oak. For years the tree has stood as one of the show spots of the city and one of the marvels of benevolent nature. Even President Eisenhower visited this historic landmark while a guest here in Thomasville. He was so impressed with this giant tree that he photographed it himself!
One of the largest Southern Live Oak trees (Quercus virginiana) east of the Mississippi, the Big Oak (c. 1680) has a limb span of 165 feet, a trunk circumference just over 26 feet and reaches 68 feet in height. Thomasville's Big Oak was one of the earliest members of the National Live Oak Society, registered in 1936 as the 49th member. The resurrection fern that grows on its branches does not harm the tree and swiftly turns from brown to lush green with rain.
Have your picture taken beside the Big Oak by the Big Oak Cam. Your photo will then be placed on the internet for you and your friends to see! Follow these directions: Stand beside the trunk or by the white sign at the Big Oak; dial 229-236-0053 on your cell phone; look at the camera on the pole across the street and follow the instructions you hear.
