During his flight to avoid capture, Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America  went by way  of Warthen, GA.  His party camped in an isolated, wooded area not far from Warthen after buying supplies at Warthen's Store.  The secluded spot was on what was then known as Griffin's Pond.  From this camp site  he and his party  traveled toward Irwin County where they were eventually overtaken by Union soldiers.
