In 1820, three members of the Padgett family settled on the banks of Watermelon Creek and began a legacy that forged its influence on agriculture, business, and spiritual life in Tattnall County for over 150 years. Once the site of a sawmill, grist mill, turpentine still, barrel making, general store, post office, and the Padgett home place, Watermelon Creek Vineyard flourishes as a testimony to the love, labor, and devotion that the Padgett family dedicated to this area. Now, the ninth generation is continuing to carve a lifestyle that centers on the abundance of the rural heritage, agriculture, and business.
The proprietor, Charles Tillman, and his family have restored and occupy the original home and have opened Watermelon Creek Vineyard as a destination venue and full service winery. The fifteen-acre site includes The Barn Yard, The Pond, The Mill House, The Vineyard, Watermelon Creek nature area, and the Winery Complex. A full production winery specializing in the muscadine grape is now opened to the public with its Ribbon Cutting on May 24, 2012 .
The first release of wines comprises the Heritage Series, and free tastings are offered. Future plans include offering various blends and varietals and the completion of the Bud Break Banquet Hall with Vineyard Terrace in August 2012 with seating for 100 .
