The 34th Annual Athens Twilight Criterium in downtown Athens is a professional cycling event and festival, tailored to be enjoyed by fans, families and racers alike. Held April 26-27, 2013, the Twilight Criterium is a favorite spot on the national cycling tour circuit, both for its unique evening format and the large crowds that gather in Athens' vibrant downtown area.
Founded in 1980 by Gene Dixon, the Athens Twilight Criterium was the first nighttime race in the United States in over 60 years. What began as one race with 40 competitors has since grown to 150 competing cylclists.
In addition to the bike races, Twilight Americana Music Festival will be held April 25-28 throughout downtown Athens. The festival features acclaimed acts Leon Russell (of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame), Mike Cooley (Drive-By Truckers), Deer Tick, and many others. Participating venues include Georgia Theatre, 40 Watt Club, The Melting Point, Green Room, Little Kings, The Green Room and Hendershot's Coffee.
