"New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music" is an exhibit from the Smithsonian's Museum on Main Street program that is traveling to 12 communities in Georgia (Americus, Bremen, Calhoun, Darien, LaGrange, Moultrie, Madison, Nashville, Perry, Thomson, Toccoa and Waycross) and telling the unique story of the state's musical traditions. "New Harmonies" highlights distinct types of American roots music, including blues, country, folk, gospel, Native American and sacred harp. The exhibit also features interactive panels, listening kiosks and tailored display cases that allow each community to explore and showcase its local music heritage.
See the exhibit in Bremen at the Warren P. Sewell Memorial Library Feb. 9 through March 23, 2013. The ribbon cutting will be at 2 p.m. on Feb. 9, and entertainment will follow with Bullsboro and Americana Express at the Bremen Methodist Church next to the library. The Bremen exhibit will feature information about the area's local musicians, including nearby Villa Rica natives Thomas Dorsey, "the Father of Gospel Music," and sacred harp singing leader Hugh McGraw and the Sewell Mill Singers.
