The Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival is an event named in honor of the founder of the American Hydrangea Society. The festival takes place the first weekend in June in Downtown Douglasville and features garden tours, celebrity lectures, a main street market, entertainment, food and fun. The Blushing Bride hydrangea will be featured as the lead specimen for the Flower Show.
Penny McHenry's love for hydrangeas grew as a result of a friend sending her a hydrangea when she lost her daughter to a tragic death. She propagated that hydrangea, and the rest is history. The American Hydrangea Society has grown to have members across the United States and internationally. Hydrangeas are planted each year in Douglasville to beautify the community.
