The GEM Theatre originally opened in downtown Calhoun in the 1920's. The building was renovated and expanded to its current size in 1939. The GEM Theatre flourished as a movie theatre and stage venue for traveling live productions throughout the 1930’s and into the 1940’s when it was purchased by the Martin Theatre Company. The name was changed to Martin Theatre in 1948. The theatre continued as Calhoun’s only movie theatre and live stage venue until it was closed in 1976. The landmark theatre is being restored to its 1939 grandeur and will re-open in 2011. In addition to hosting productions, the theatre is available for tours and rental.
