Central State Hospital opened in 1842 as Georgia's first public psychiatric hospital. The museum is located on Broad Street in the Old Train Depot across from the CSH Auditorium. It highlights the more than 150-year existence of the hospital. Groups are welcome.
Central State Hospital offers a variety of tour options through appointments.
1. Museum Tours (30 min-1 hour) - Guests can view authentic items that were once used at the world's second largest mental institution, as well as learn about its unique history.
2. Driving Campus Tour (1 hour) - Guests can take a guided tour of the CSH campus, which at one time comprised 20,000 acres. Today the campus sits on roughly 1,750 acres and is Georgia's oldest and largest state psychiatric hospital.
3. Cemetery Tour (45 minutes) - Guests can tour one or all three of our historic cemeteries. All cemeteries are on the National Register of Historic Places, and more than 25,000 individuals are buried in these cemeteries.
