The Old City Cemetery Committee, a part of the Washington County Historical Society in Sandersville, will host a Lantern Tour on Nov. 1, 2014, in conjunction with the 150th celebration of the Civil War Sesquicentennial. The Old City Cemetery was first used as a cemetery in 1832 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Notable historical figures buried there include Thomas W. Hardwick, Governor of Georgia (1921-1923), U.S. Senator (1914-1919) and Representative (1903-1914); Coleman R. Pringle, the father of Prohibition in Georgia; and eight Sandersville mayors. The cemetery is also the resting place of more than 99 Civil War soldiers, and many will be featured on the tour. The cemetery is also the site of a skirmish between General Joseph Wheeler's Rebel troops and those of William T. Sherman. Please join us for the memorable tour. We know you will not be disappointed. The price is $7.00. For further information, call 478-232-3962 or 478-521-0655.
