The Burning of Cassville commemoration will begin at dusk (around 6 p.m.) on Nov. 2, 2013, at the Cassville Confederate Cemetery, marking the 149th anniversary of the burning of Cassville. Join the Cassville Historical Society for hot dogs, roasted marshmallows and a bonfire. Admission is free. Bring a chair to enjoy the fireside gathering.
The Fifth Ohio Cavalry burned the town of Cassville on Nov. 5, 1864. Only three houses and the churches escaped the flames. The women and children of Cassville fled to the cemetery and hid among the tombstones to escape the burning town.
