Release your spirit in this uniquely American tradition. The Singing of the Sacred Harp brings a variety of people from shared cultural heritages together to sing four-part hymns and anthems. Beginners and newcomers are welcome as singers or listeners. No musical experience or religious affiliation is required.
This annual event in Alpharetta has been bringing together an informal network of people interested in participating and promoting a cappella singing from the Sacred Harp and other shape note singing books for more than 140 years. Sacred Harp singers typically sit in a hollow square forming one of four voice parts on each side of the square, with the singers facing inward so they can see and hear each other as they sing. The singers spread "dinner on the ground" at 12:00 p.m., and everyone brings a covered dish to share.
