Jekyll Island summer camps extend fun and learning

Article Date 03/07/2017

JEKYLL ISLAND, GA – March 1 – Summer is an exciting time on Jekyll Island for kids of all ages. Whether a junior scientist, budding golf or tennis pro, or history enthusiast – Jekyll Island Authority has a summer camp for every interest. This year’s offerings provide kids a chance to learn and explore all over Jekyll while their parents relax and enjoy the island.

“It’s like summer camp for the whole family,” said Jones Hooks, JIA Executive Director. “Kids can spend the day learning and having fun while parents enjoy a little down time. In the afternoon, the whole family can regroup and have fun together.”

Once again, Jekyll Island Authority will offer four distinctive camp experiences. New this year, Tennis Camp sessions will be grouped by skill level, affording a better experience for campers. All camps – Tennis, Golf, Sea Turtle and Time Travelers – will again enjoy a Summer Waves Waterpark day, in addition to their educational activities and exploration.

At only $280 per week, registration includes: five full days of camp, camp t-shirt, camp water bottle, daily boxed lunch, and a one-time visit during camp to Summer Waves Waterpark. All four camps share the same hours, but different dates. Check the website for specific camp availability. Camp hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Aftercare is currently not available.

Sea Turtle Camp

The Georgia Sea Turtle Center invites campers to enjoy fun-in-the-sun activities, field-based adventures and unforgettable sea turtles. Each day will focus on turtle biology, conservation, and the threats these animals face. Explore the many habitats of Jekyll Island: freshwater ponds, maritime forest, tidal marshlands and the beach, as well as the myriad of turtle species and wildlife found in coastal Georgia. Interact daily with GSTC staff, volunteers, and AmeriCorps members during this unique week of learning and adventure. Experience this extraordinary program and learn how you can protect our natural resources, save a species, and make a difference.

Golf Camp

The Jekyll Island Golf Club invites campers to learn more about the game of golf. Camp sessions are grouped by skill level, and feature daily instruction from the Club’s professional staff. With fun skills challenges and on-course play related to each day’s topic, campers will put learning into practice each day. Concepts include: putting, chipping, pitching, full swing, etiquette and rules.

Tennis Camp

The Jekyll Island Tennis Center invites campers to improve their tennis skills and develop their personal style of play. Camp sessions are grouped by skill level, and split the day between personalized tennis stroke structure and improvement. Campers will apply these skills in fun games and challenging drills.

Time Travelers Camp

Travel through history this summer with the Jekyll Island Museum. Discover Jekyll Island’s eventful past through a variety of daily field trips, games and hands-on activities. Your summer camp adventure includes outings through the ages, exploring Native American and Colonial times, the Golden Age of Piracy, the Gilded Era, the Roaring 20s, and the 1950s.

Jekyll Island, a small barrier island on Georgia’s coast, is dedicated to maintaining the delicate balance between nature and humankind through conservation, education, and preservation. Surrounded by salt marshes, expansive oceanfront, and one of the last in-tact ancient maritime forests, it is a peaceful coastal habitat situated within the Golden Isles. From 20 miles of bike paths to historic cottages, the island is a place of discovery and exploration for the people of Georgia and beyond.
