Start your Macon, Georgia arts weekend at the Tubman African-American Museum. This museum named after the 19th-century female abolitionist Harriet Tubman displays fine and folk art and hosts events throughout the year, with an emphasis on African-Americans in Georgia. Look for the African-American-history mural that traces a path from slavery to modern times. From there, it’s on to the Museum of Arts and Sciences, where a single trip can introduce you to a dizzying array of indoor and outdoor displays, including a mini zoo with small animals, a planetarium and sculptures. Don’t miss the 40,000,000-year-old fossil named Ziggy, a prehistoric whale that settled in Georgia long before humans ever did. The museum’s planetarium hosts daily shows as well as weekly telescopic viewings of the “Sky Over Macon.” For a satisfying Southern lunch, try the Bear's Den. Located walking distance from Mercer University, this locally owned treasure features some of the best down-home cooking around. At the recently refurbished Cox Capitol Theatre (dollar night is a bargain), catch a classic movie or a concert as well as a bite to eat – the theater has an on-site restaurant. Another bargain can be found at the pet-friendly Best Western Inn and Suites of Macon, which is convenient to Interstate 475.
