On May 15-17, join the Georgia Conservancy for our annual Lower Flint River Paddle at Rocky Bend Retreat. This trip is one of our Heartland Rivers of Georgia Paddle Series events. Our trip will include the opportunity to visit Longleaf Ridge Farms and the Stripling Irrigation Research Park to learn about cutting edge water conservation technology being instituted in South Georgia. Our goal is to highlight the delicate balance between river and farm and the steps some south Georgia farmers are taking to lead the nation in water conservation.

Located south of Albany in Newton, the Rocky Bend Retreat will be our headquarters for a fantastic weekend exploring a beautiful section of the Flint River.

“Nestled on the shores of the gently rolling Flint River in a quiet corner of southwest Georgia, Rocky Bend Flint River Retreat is the perfect place to leave the hustle-bustle of everyday behind. Whether you are looking for a base camp to enjoy the best hunting and fishing our region offers or you are visiting relatives in the area, our family owned and operated retreat is waiting just for you."

  • Friday: Join us for a relaxing evening at Rocky Bend Retreat. We'll be welcoming paddlers, setting up camp, enjoying dinner and drinks, and sharing stories around the campfire.

  • Saturday: After breakfast, we will depart for the Radium Springs boat landing just south of Albany and paddle a beautiful 8-mile section of the Flint River. From here we will paddle past the once-famous resort of Radium Springs and see its crystal clear waters mix with the waters of the Flint. Depending on water levels, along the way we will see blue hole springs and limestone outcroppings. We will take out at the Mitchell County Landing before returning to Rocky Bend Retreat for the evening.

  • Sunday Morning: After breakfast, we will paddle 6 miles on the Flint River south of Rocky Bend Retreat, passing through the mystic limestone bluffs and majestic cypress trees. The clear water of the Flint, fed by underground aquifers, makes paddling this section of the Flint River unforgettable. At lunchtime, we will take a break from paddling at Longleaf Ridge Farms to learn more about this sixth generation farm that produces corn, soybeans and peanuts. Afterwards, we will caravan over to Stripling Irrigation Research Facility for a tour of this UGA led-facility that leads the nation in row crop water conservation techniques including drop head irrigation, variable rate irrigation and soil moisture sensors to conserve water.

In-kind donors and local food producers we will be enjoying during our weekend: Sweetwater Brewing Company (Atlanta), ASW Distillery (Atlanta), and Cafe Campesino Coffee (Americus).

Join us on a Georgia Conservancy Stewardship Trip to learn more about important location-specific conservation issues, as well as statewide advocacy opportunities. Our goal is simple: Create a connection between some of Georgia’s most precious places and the people needed to protect them.
