Overlook Garden at Callaway Gardens
Pine Mountain

Pine Mountain is the gateway to west Georgia’s Callaway Resort & Gardens and F.D. Roosevelt State Park. With small-town Southern charm, quaint shops, homecookin’ and history, it has something for everyone, including President Franklin D. Roosevelt back in 1924 when he visited the natural warm springs for relief from polio.

Nearby in Warm Springs, the Little White House State Historic Site was built in the 1930s when Roosevelt was governor of New York. After visiting the 88-degree buoyant waters, he continued to return to the area and developed some of his New Deal programs based on experiences in the community. The site is home to a museum with his 1938 Ford convertible and the “Unfinished Portrait” (he died while posing).

With more than 9,000 acres, F.D. Roosevelt is the largest state park in Georgia. Backpack the 23-mile Pine Mountain Trail to see waterfalls, forests and creeks brimming with wildlife. At Dowdell’s Knob, there’s a life-sized statue of FDR to commemorate the spot where he picnicked. Go for a swim in the spring-fed Liberty Bell swimming pool, a Civilian Conservation Corps project.

Callaway Gardens is a vacation spot that every family should visit. Take in raptor shows, let butterflies alight on kiddos’ heads, walk through the azalea garden and bike along more than 10 miles of trails. After all that exploring, book a stay at the lodge, or rent a villa or cottage for the weekend.

Other Pine Mountain highlights include the Old South Bazaar, Wild Animal Safari and the Chipley Historical Center.
