Center of the World Monument
The "Center of the World" historic site/monument in Hartwell, Ga., honors the location of the Cherokee Indian assembly ground. It was there that the Cherokees met to hold their tribal council and met with traders from Augusta and other Southern locations. The Native Americans bartered hides, furs and blankets with the traders. The area was inhabited by Native Americans until a treaty with the Cherokee Indians was signed.
