King Wehadkee Covered Bridge

Location

101 W. Mulberry Street
LaGrange GA 30240

The Covered Bridge at Mulberry Street Cemetery was installed in 2022, but its roots stretch back more than a century. Originally built in 1890 by George King—son of famed bridge builder Horace King—it once spanned Wehadkee Creek, now part of West Point Lake.

This bridge replaced an earlier 1873 structure by Horace King, which was destroyed in a 1886 flood. Like most of the King’s work, it uses the Town Lattice Truss design. While the full bridge measured over 110 feet in length, the preserved section here is about 60 feet.

Decommissioned in the 1960s, the bridge was relocated to Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, where it served as a scenic feature. Today, it connects Mulberry Street Cemetery to The Thread, a multi-use trail crossing Cary Branch. Though the roof and some siding were replaced during reinstallation, most of the timber is original—an enduring testament to the craftsmanship and durability of the Kings’ work.
