Illuminate the Holidays with these 6 Georgia Light Displays
In historic settings and charming small towns, these holiday lights are gifts everyone can enjoy.
Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, a family retreat or a multi-generational reunion, the holidays are about celebrating together. One activity everyone can appreciate is enjoying holiday light displays. Take the stress out of the holidays and replace the crowded malls with a few days among family or friends admiring these six favorite light displays around Georgia.
Jekyll Island Historic District
Let the warm, white sand replace the frozen, cold snow with a coastal-themed Christmas this year with a walk through Jekyll Island’s historic district to view all of the twinkling holiday lights. It all starts with the lighting of the Christmas tree the Saturday after Thanksgiving and continues throughout December. During the week before Christmas, the sounds of the season include the Christmas bagpiper, dressed in full Scottish regalia and playing seasonal favorites.
Barnsley Resort, Adairsville
A more traditional holiday setting can be found at North Georgia’s Barnsley Resort. Guests can stroll through a festively decorated fairytale English-inspired village, historically preserved ruins and gardens adorned with 1 million twinkling lights. While there, take part in winter activities such as horseback riding through the wood, or an afternoon building a gingerbread house. In the evening, indulge in s’mores around the firepit. Barnsley Resort’s Light Up the Holidays packages begin at $259 per night Sunday through Thursday, and from $349 per night for weekends (Friday and Saturday).
Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain
This year marks the 26th anniversary of Callaway Gardens' award-winning Fantasy In Lights, which includes 8 millions lights stretching more than five miles, creating 15 larger-than-life holiday scenes. Visitors can drive through the lighted scenes or enjoy the experience riding on the Jolly Trolley. There are also two scenes amid the festive Christmas Village.’Twas the Night Before Christmas and The Nativity shows last about 10 minutes and are presented consecutively. A variety of Fantasy In Lights overnight packages are available.
No need to walk through the lights when you can have the lights walk by you. This year is the 21st Annual Illuminated Christmas Parade in Hinesville. The parade kicks off the 11th Annual Christmas in the Park festival. It all takes place the first weekend in December.
Chehaw Park Festival of Lights, Albany
Whether you drive your own car or enjoy the holiday scenery aboard the train, Albany’s Chehaw Park Festival of Light is a perfect way to celebrate the season. Each glowing piece is handcrafted in the park's welding shop, making this a truly one-of-a-kind spectacle.
Ludy Christmas Spectacular, Columbus
Sometimes you just have to drive around your neighborhood for the best light displays. The Ludy family of Columbus starts decorating in August to assemble the more than 150,000 lights it takes to create the Ludy Christmas Spectacular at their home on Ironstone Drive.
