Winterville Historic Heartland

Known as The Marigold Capital of Georgia and the Friendship City, Winterville is the only incorporated municipality located entirely within Athens-Clarke County. Winterville is six miles from downtown Athens (now unified with Clarke County to form the government known as Athens-Clarke County.)

Winterville, Ga. offers small town living at its best just a short six mile drive from the University of Georgia in downtown Athens. The town's history dates back to the 1700s when land grants brought settlers here. In 1904, the city of Winterville was incorporated, and it is the only municipality located entirely within Athens-Clark County. The annual Marigold Festival is a popular tourist attraction that began over 30 years ago to raise funds to beautify the town and improve the community.
