A visit to the Georgia coast is a great escape any time of year, but during the holidays, it's particularly enchanting. Include these nine activities in your coastal getaway for a truly festive holiday season.

  • Go shopping

    Shop small, heading to the St. Marys Downtown Merchants Christmas Open House on Nov. 14, 2017, Christmas on the Riverfront in Savannah on Dec. 1-3, and Mistletoe Market at Glynn Visual Arts on St. Simons Island Dec. 2-3.

  • Watch a tree lighting

    Join residents in the annual tradition of tree lighting celebrations typically held Thanksgiving weekend or in early December:

  • Watch a movie outdoors

    Many Georgia towns frequently hold outdoor movie nights in the spring, summer and autumn. Thanks to mild temperatures, coastal towns get to extend that practice well into the fall. On Nov. 24, take your family to Movie on the Green at Jekyll Island Beach Village. where they’ll be showing "Elf."

  • Experience Christmas past

    On Dec. 1-2, 38th Annual Hofwyl Plantation Christmas welcomes guests to a celebration of the holiday season in the style of plantation life in the 1850s. 

    Enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner at the garrison at Fort King George during Colonial Christmas at Fort King George on Dec. 9. Reservations are required. 

  • Watch a parade

    Gather for local parades that showcase the true hometown flavor of the holiday season:

  • Tour festively decorated homes

    Tour the cottages in Jekyll Island's Historic District Nov. 26-Dec. 31 to admire the historic homes adorned for the holidays. Combine that with Christmas Twilight Tours Saturdays in December and enjoy special evening trolley rides, a stop at Faith Chapel, and music and refreshments at Indian Mound Cottage.

    The annual St. Marys Christmas Tour of Homes is set for Dec. 9, giving you the perfect excuse to get a babysitter and enjoy an evening exploring historic homes.

    On Dec. 26-30, enjoy Holiday Evening Tours by Candlelight of the Davenport House in Savannah with light refreshments and music.

  • Go ice skating

    Nothing says classic winter fun more than a turn on the ice. The Jekyll Island Skating Village sets up shop Nov. 17, 2017, - Jan. 7, 2018. Children are welcome to skate, however rental skates start at a size 9.
