Embark on a memorable vacation to Cumberland Island, Georgia's largest and southernmost barrier island. Here, pristine maritime forests, undeveloped beaches and wide marshes whisper the stories of both man and nature. Natives, missionaries, enslaved African Americans and wealthy industrialists all walked here. Cumberland Island is also home to more than 9,800 acres of congressionally designated wilderness. You'll see all sorts of wildlife, including native horses running free along the shore. Visit the website for many tour options. The Mainland Visitor Center is open daily, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ferries depart in season at 9 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. and return at 10:15 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. with an extra departure Monday through Saturday at 2:45 p.m.
