Explore a circa 1891 Victorian Era conjoined jail and sheriff's home, one of a few known to exist today. Tour the old jail cells with the original locking mechanism, and see the graffiti left on the cell walls by former prisoners. See the padded cell used for the "hard to handle" prisoners. The old gallows yard is adjacent to the jail. Volunteer guides will accompany you during your tour of the old jail, where you will also be shown the segregated areas for jailed men and women and hear the stories about the resident ghost Essie.

Research your family history in the Genealogy Research Center located in the Old Jail Museum. The library contains historical information on Washington County and other Georgia counties. Researchers can trace their local roots using family files, digitized newspapers and obituaries, Bible records, cemetery records, family file card data, local history files. Volunteers are available to assist the researcher.
